2002 Honda Odyssey Front Brake Pads Replacement Project

This time I decided to change the front pads myself instead of taking to the dealer. The OEM pads cost about 39.99 in PepBoys. It didnt had the optional hardware kit, which would be preferable if the pads need any repair or missing parts as well.

The inset image #8 above is used for reference to replace the front brake pads in my Honda Odyssey 2002.

I fished out my trusted 2.25 tone Craftsman floor jack and 2 matching stands. I put the floor jack under the front engine mounting rod and lifted it just enough that the jack is holding the weight but still the tires are not moving freely. This will help me to unloosend those 5 weel nuts without worrying about the wheel spinning. Once the wheel nuts are loosened pump up the floor jack even more, so that I can slip in the two stands under either sides chasis frame of the van, just under the front doors. At this point make sure your have a solid block or a wedge is inserted behind the back wheels.

Using a 14mm socket and wrench loosen the lower bolt of the caliper pins. This will help to swing the caliper over and using a coat hanger hook to the bolt hole and the struts spring, keep is secured without falling back.

Now its easier to slide out the worn brake pads.

If the parts doesn't come with the hardware repair kit, then make sure to salvage the "B" or "M" shaped clips. This clips are easy to detach by hand from the old pads.

This is the time if you wish to replace your old brake oil. I use a turkey baster and
opening the break fluid reservoir, remove some oil (Make sure to refill with new dot3 or 4 oil later). Apply some brake grease on the back of the shim. Hold the piston with a C-Clamp and a piece of wood. Tighten the clamp until it is back in.

Finally my new pads are placed and the bold is tightened to 20~35 # of torque. The wheel nuts are tightened to 65~75#(?) of torque.

Replace the brake fluid removed earlier with fresh fluid. And pump the brakes a few times untill it becomes hard before driving away.

If you are in Northern Virginia and need a help in replacing your ody brake pads, please email me. I will be able to help you if your are doing for the first time.

Good Luck!!!
